Examples
Thesis word-limit check
Compare the body-only count against your university's strict 10,000-word limit, with footnotes excluded.
Freelance billing
Charge per-word translation work; the counter gives you the exact billable word count from the client's .docx.
Readability audit
Aim for Flesch 60-70 (plain English). The tool flags passages above grade-12 reading level so you can simplify them.
Common use cases
- Academic word-limit verification (thesis, dissertation, journal article)
- Translation and freelance writing billing
- SEO content length validation
- Readability tuning for marketing copy
- NaNoWriMo / novel-draft progress tracking
Troubleshooting
- Count differs from Microsoft Word
- Word counts hyphenated words as one; some tools count them as two. Check the "hyphen handling" setting. Also confirm footnote/header inclusion matches between the two tools.
- Reading-ease score seems wrong for non-English text
- Flesch is English-only. For Vietnamese, French, etc., word/character counts are accurate but the readability score is not meaningful.
- Tracked changes inflate the count
- Accept or reject all tracked changes in Word first, or toggle "ignore tracked-change deletions" so the counter ignores struck-through text.
